Emma Reid
Site specific installation
Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Stirling Road, Larbert FK5 4WR
I make installations, often using live-feed video and sculpture, to explore behaviour, gesture, interactions, and performativity. Observing people’s behaviour in public spaces is my starting point; I am fascinated by the ways we interact and see these moments as performances on our shared public stage.
For Forth Valley Art Beat I will be making new site-specific sculptural work in Forth Valley Royal Hospital. This project is informed by the caregiving work of the hospital and the large number of staff, patients, and visitors who enter this space each day. I will invite these people to become a part of the work by meeting with me to take an alginate cast of the shape made inside our hands while we hold hands. This simple yet unfamiliar action will prompt two strangers to make contact and share stillness. How much may we learn about each other during this short meeting?
Later, in my studio, the small alginate forms created between our hands will be cast into plaster. The collection of plaster casts will be installed in Forth Valley Royal Hospital in June, each one individual and a direct representation of the contact made.
I hope this project encourages your curiosity. I would be delighted if you would like to become part of this installation. To find out more or to make a cast with me, please find me in the Atrium of Forth Valley Royal Hospital on:
