About the Artist
A love of walking, the local landscapes and gardens are Katherine’s main sources of inspiration. Through close observation she tries to capture in her paintings a sense of place, colour, texture, light and mood and an illusion of credibility. Her studio and basement will form the Garden Gallery and her colourful garden will be open during Open Studios in conjunction with Scotland’s Gardens.
Having originally trained and worked as a woven textile designer, I am now working as an artist. My love of walking, the local landscapes and gardens are my main sources of inspiration. Perhaps because I was a weaver I am particularly drawn to natural horizontal stripes of colour and textures which I see in landscapes. I also like the sense of journey conveyed by paths. Painting is an opportunity to play with colour and experiment with the balance of contrasting elements within a composition. Through close observation I also try to capture a sense of place, light and mood and an illusion of credibility. Most of my work and larger pieces are in oils, using a combination of wet into wet and wet on dry techniques to build up layers, but I also enjoy using watercolours and mixed media.
I welcome commissions, enjoy teaching small art groups and am happy to give talks about my work (either as a textile designer or an artist).
My studio and basement will form the Garden Gallery and my colourful and pretty garden will be open during Open Studios in conjunction with Scotland’s Gardens.
The colourful and pretty country garden will be open during Open Studios in conjunction with Scotland’s Gardens.
There will be demonstrations of willow basket making at the weekends and most mid-week days.
At the weekends (weather permitting!) there will also be teas available and creative workshops for kids using natural materials from the garden.
